On a very fine Sunday, 15 Easycyclers set off from Peter’s yard, with 2 new members and 3 returned recent joiners among their number. We rode down the Innocent and into Craigmiller Castle Park and got a glimpse of the Castle, and then turned downhill to our main destination, the Bawsinch nature reserve.
Although a wildlife reserve, our main focus was the splendid collection of trees, where nearly every species native to the UK is represented, including some Witch Elms.
The Ranger, Ken, took is on a walk around some of the trees there. It became obvious that the planned 90 mins is nowhere near enough to cover the reserve, but alas the lunch venue had been booked and we had to say a reluctant farewell.
A quick spin round the paths to the Espy Portobello for lunch, where we were lucky enough to all be able to sit outside, and get a view of the sea.
But all good things come to an end and at length we rode up the long bridge at St Marks, across to the Innocent and then back to the Meadows. Seven of us made it back to Victor Hugo for coffees and pain au raisin.
We’d been very lucky to get unforecast good weather for a great view of the Bawsinch, and to site outside at Portobello Prom. A success, and one we’ll definitely go for again, perhaps in Spring 2017.
