Easy Cycle launches 2016 programme in Riccarton.
Seizing a calm dry day between storm Gertrude (yesterday) and storm Henry (tomorrow), 13 ‘intrepids’ gathered at Middle Meadow Walk for the first ride of the year. Welcome to two newcomers.
After hearing a ‘smidgen’ of history (Canal agreed by Act of Parliament 1817; opened in 1822; 31 miles long, etc.) we set off, only to find the Millenium Link Gates at Leamington Bridge closed to us. Ever resourceful, however, we either lifted our bikes over or pedalled round the canal basin, spinning out of town past Meggatland/Wester Hailes and over the by-pass.
At bridge 12, Hermiston House Road, we left the Canal, going south into Heriot-Watt campus. After sharing brief info on the university, we took Riccarton Mains Road and headed for Riccarton Garden Centre for lunch (soup/paninis/baked potatoes etc.)
We then headed south and took Corslet Road, Muir Wood Road and Lanark Road turning right opposite Baberton Avenue to join the Water of Leith cycleway. This provided more ‘rural’, off-road cycling back to the canal and home.
